Orchestral Workout
ABC Classics cat. no. ABC 476 3223
Great music will transform your exercise experience! This carefully constructed album offers a real alternative to the standard gym 'doof-doof'. It includes tracks for warming up and cooling down. The disc features a 25-minute 'walk' set, at a steadier pace than the 25-minute 'run' bracket, either of which could also be a suitable accompaniment for a floor class. Power up hills to the beat of Carmina burana, or be inspired to stride out to the joyful strains of Vivaldi. This disc is a perfect opportunity to capitalise on those New Year good intentions!

Carl Vine - Complete Symphonies 1-6
2-CD set
ABC Classics cat. no. ABC 476 7179
Carl Vine’s six symphonies trace concisely the evolution that brought him back to the original symphonic tradition that modernity temporarily curtailed.
Carl Vine’s metaphor for his own symphonic practice is drawn from the natural sciences: composition begins with a ‘crystal’, a musical idea whose characteristic angles and planes are explored and transformed in the course of the work’s creation. This process of transformation, of presenting material in varying lights, coupled with the composer’s sense of timing, makes for a series of works whose inherent drama is considerable.
These recordings feature the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under the batons of Edo de Waart and the late Stuart Challender, with the assistance of Synergy percussion ensemble ("Percussion Symphony") and the Sydney Philharmonia Choir ("Choral Symphony").

Carl Vine String Quartets
ABC Classics cat. no. ABC 476 5168
Carl Vine's music for string quartet spans nearly three decades, so acts as an album of snapshots that document the development of his musical language. His earliest mature works date from the 1970s, when he first came to prominence as a composer for dance, particularly in collaboration with Graeme Murphy and the Sydney Dance Company on works such as the legendary 1978 tribute to Jean Cocteau, Poppy.
The five works on this recording range from Vine's first quartet, Knips Suite, composed and premiered (by the Arditti Quartet) in 1979, through to his fifth, composed and first performed (by the Goldner String Quartet) in 2007. This is the first commercial recording of those two works, as well as of the second quartet (1984).

Carl Vine - Choral Symphony
cat. no. ABC 456 698-2
Sydney Symphony Orchestra Michael Kieran Harvey (piano) Sydney Philharmonia Motet Choir Edo de Waart (conductor)
This CD marked the first commercial release of Vine's "Piano Concerto", and the first complete recording of his first six symphonies. The completely renovated version of Sypmhony No. 4 was written expressly for the release of this recording. Symphonies 1 to 6 have since been released together as a two-CD anthology, The Complete Symphonies (2006).
The following description is provided by ABC Classics Records:
The long-awaited new recording from one of Australia’s most popular composers. Carl Vine, composer of much-loved concert works and film scores, has produced a Choral Symphony in the grand tradition of Beethoven and Vaughan Williams and as heard on ABC Classic FM. This popular work has been performed by orchestras and choirs all over Australia, and is finally available on CD in a scintillating performance by the Sydney Philharmonia Motet Choir and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Vine's dark and dramatic Choral Symphony tells the story of Creation using the myths of ancient Babylonia. In a completely different and lighter style, the Piano Concerto is a virtuosic work written for the gifted Michael Kieran Harvey. The slow movements is one of the most lyrical that Carl Vine has ever composed, evoking sophisticated and piquant ‘French’ harmonies to beautiful effect.
The disc is rounded off by a brand new revision of Carl Vine’s Symphony No. 4, now called Symphony No. 4.2, which is a single movement juxtaposing many moods, from brooding and shadowy to brilliant and songful.

Four Hands
Australian Music for Piano
ABC Classics cat. no. ABC 481 4591
Viney-Grinberg Piano Duo
Described as 'unforgettable' by The Australian and 'barnstorming' by The New York Times, the Viney-Grinberg Piano Duo enjoy a stellar international profile. In their new album on ABC Classics, they survey recent music by Australian composers for piano four-hands, much of it receiving its world-premiere recording.
Music for piano four-hands began in the latter half of the 18th century, as the piano itself gained popularity. In the words of the pianists themselves, 'the five Australian compositions on this disc grow and build on that tradition, with ambitious largescale works of complexity and virtuosity, as well as miniatures that deal with the interior world of the human heart and mind. Despite the diversity of music on this disc – a fascinating variety of responses to the musical opportunities afforded by piano four-hand performance – there is also a unifying thread of dynamism and spirited energy.'
Ross Edwards' A Flight of Sunbirds showcases a seemingly effortless affection; Carl Vine and Stuart Greenbaum's Sonatas explores the potential for four-handed counterpoint. Peter Sculthorpe's 'delicate and wistful quartet of beautiful tableaux' follow the tradition of arranging existing works for piano four-hands. And Elena Kats-Chernin's Victor's Heart uses the warm resonance of the form to create a touching musical tribute.
