Review:
... an absolutely riveting work devised as a reflection of the cellist's psychological processes during performance. Isserlis's intensely visceral playing and profound involvement in the score and his recorded alter-ego was a marvel to hear and behold, evoking Vine's "hall of mirrors in which artifice and reality collide" to stunning effect. The last and longest item, Inner World by the Australian Carl Vine, for amplified cello with electronic support, could easily become a cult piece. Starting like a cadenza for some romantic cello concerto, it grows ever more elaborate, always tonal and lyrical, with the soloist in duet with himself at times, culminating in a wild, exciting coda. [...] The only thing that made any impression was a new and vibrant piece by Carl Vine for solo cello accompanying itself on multi-tracked, pre-processed tape (the methodology of Steve Reich's "New York Counterpoint"). Called "Inner World", it was evocative, ecstatic, heartfelt: proof of the intelligent accessibility that places Vine, now, second only to Peter Sculthorpe in the natural ranking of Australian composers. Review:
... his Piano Sonata of 1990 is one of the most significant works in the form since the great Piano Sonata of Elliott Carter. [Jim Svejda, The Record Shelf Guide to Classical CDs & Audio cassettes, - 4th Edition]

The work lasts some 16 minutes, and fills that time span with a sure and engrossing progression of ideas. The start is murky and mysterious: rolling, repeated quite chords seem to shape almost visual sculptures out of silence. Gradually the music takes on a more overt sense of motion: the second movement ends in an exhilarating display of pure virtuosity, without violating the narrative quality in the music that sweeps us along from the start. The Vine Sonata was quite a find, loaded with computer-like blips and virtuosic storm clouds, and [Michael] Harvey handled it brilliantly. A major cult could develop around this guy once word gets out. [Richard S. Ginell, American Record Guide, May/June 1994]
